Indoor Pool Sessions

During the winter season, the CPA enjoys access to indoor pool sessions around the Maryland, Virginia, and Washington D.C. area to practice and learn new skills. These are open sessions, not lessons, however quite often you can find a friendly CPA member who is willing to spot and give advice. Members are responsible for bringing their own boat and gear.

Important: Visit the Forums for specific pool discussions, available open dates, updates or to coordinate rolling practice with other paddlers.

Everyone who wants to attend should email Mike Hamilton with their desired dates and second choice dates. Be realistic – pick the dates you want and can really make.

The choices for December and January 2013 are:

  • Dec 15
  • Jan – 5, 19, 26th.
To register EMAIL Mike H. at pool_sessions@cpakayaker.com{mailto address=’pool_sessions@cpakayaker.com’ text=’Mike H.’ encode=’javascript’ subject=’I would like to attend the Univ of MD Pool Sessions’}:with:

Your first choice dates
Your second choice dates
Your preference for deep or shallow

I will email the final roster with wait list on December 17th. Attached to the roster you will find directions and other important information.

There will also be dates in Jan, Feb and Mar – to be announced on November 26.

The registration for pool sessions at the University of Maryland, College Park is now closed for Fall 2011.

Registration for Spring 2012 will open on November 26, 2011. We expect to get 8 sessions in Jan, Feb and March.

1. Cancellation:
If you must cancel, it is your responsibility to find a replacement. There is not enough space at the pool to meet demand, so please do not let your space go unused. No shows are subject to removal from the roster for the rest of the season.

2. Waiver:
The UMCP waiver is filled out on-site the first time that you visit; you only need to do this the first time.

3. Fee:
The fee is $15 for members, $25 for non-members, payable in advance with paypal or check payable to Chesapeake Paddler’s Association or at the pool with cash or check.

4. Recommended: If there is any questionable winter weather, confirm the pool is open with the Eppley Recreation Center Info Desk (301-226-4500).

5. Required: BOATS MUST BE TOTALLY CLEAN. Boats and gear must be clear of leaves, mud, grass, etc. There is a hose by the door at pool-level for those who need to use it and a fellow kayaker might have a sponge if you need one.

6. Directions: Take your best route to I-95 south between Baltimore and Washington. Exit at the Capitol Beltway (I-495) towards College Park-Route 1. Follow Route 1 (Baltimore Blvd) south approximately 1 mile. Turn west on University Blvd (Rt- 193) for 1.4 m. Turn left at Stadium Drive. Make first left at the circle. Take next left. Proceed straight sown the hill into lot 2g. Look to right for the Outdoor Recreation Center red roll up door. See attached map for direction to the building. Look for kayaks on cars.

7. Check-in: at the Outdoor Recreation Center to sign a waiver. You will need to sigh a UMCP waiver if you have not already (last year) and you will also need to sign a CPA waiver. If you did not send me a check, DO NOT MAKE PAYMENT TO THE DESK PERSONNEL; it has to be to CPA.

Check here for dates and registration instructions”

We are currently working with UMCP to secure several pool dates this winter. When we know the dates, we will post them here and on the forum.   CPA will be subsidizing the cost of these pool sessions and they will be limited to CPA members.

Thanks,
Mike. *}
