Come dip your paddle in saltwater with the Chesapeake Paddlers Association’s newest piracy, the Pirates of the Atlantic Coast.
We’ll be active from Cape Henlopen down into the Virginia Barrier Islands. Whether you live along the coast, are available for a paddle on vacation, or want to drive in from elsewhere in the Chesapeake area, we’d love to have you join us.
Meeting Tuesday evenings, we’re starting out by exploring the protected salt marshes and bays behind Assateague Island, Ocean City, and the Delaware beaches. Some of our initial paddles are scheduled for Old Ferry Landing on Assateague Island, and different launches in the Assawoman Wildlife Area.
Later, the piracy’s Tuesday launches may range up and down the coast, perhaps in search of dolphins near Cape Henlopen, as well as inland to places like Pocomoke River State Park or the Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge. As we get established, we’ll also plan some more ambitious weekend paddles with mid-morning starts to give CPA members driving across the Bay Bridge ample time to join us.
In fine CPA tradition, we’ll always strive to follow our paddles with great food and drink at distinctive local restaurants.
Co-captains for the piracy are recent coastal transplants, Jean Wunder in Lewes, Delaware, and Scott Bekker in Ocean City, Maryland. Jean is on the CPA Steering Committee and has been a co-captain of the Pirates of Baltimore. Scott regularly paddled with the Pirates of the North and the Pirates of Baltimore. Lending valuable help getting the piracy launched are Mike Hamilton, Laura Scharle, and Adam Mattel.
Look for us on Meetup or contact Jean at wundtch@aol.com or Scott at sfbekker@gmail.com.
