August 5 - PoG Paddle and Potluck!

Postby fpharris » Fri Jul 30, 2010 10:48 am

Paddling out of Gravely Point yesterday was a great change of pace but on August 5 we'll paddle away from our usual venue - Columbia Island Marina - at 6:30 pm. Gather by no later than 6:00 or 6:15 to give everyone time to get their boats off their vehicles, get skirts and PFDs on, etc. We might cut the paddling time a little short - be off the water by around 7:45 - because ...

... instead of running over to Noodles afterwards, we'll do a Mexican-themed potluck burrito dinner right at the Marina!

Here's what we have so far:
Cyndi and Dave - beans, diced tomatoes, stove, and pots to heat food
Rob - cold salad with corn, tomatoes, onions, etc. ... he says it's delicious (his wife makes it :D )
Peter - fruit tart for dessert ... it is delicious (Wegman's makes it)
And here's what we still need:
Burrito fixin's - soft tortillas, shredded lettuce, sour cream, grated cheese, sauteed peppers and onions, and ???? We might want to have two people bring all the fixin's ... and this stuff is sort of "mandatory" if we want burritos!
    Chips and guacamole and salsa
    Drinks
Anything other food you can think of?
It might be helpful to have an extra stove and propane canisters "just in case"

Be sure to post your meal contribution on this forum so we can see who is bringing what. Also, if you can't contribute to the meal that's cool but let us know you're coming so we have plenty for everyone!

The NWS forecast for next Thursday calls for partly sunny skies, with a high near 93. Well ... who the heck really knows? If it doesn't rain, we'll paddle then eat; if it rains, we'll just eat!

The sun is setting earler and earlier. We noticed last night that it was beginning to get dusky by about 8:00 and was pretty dark-ish by 8:30. I don't think we'll need lights for the August 5 paddle but I'll begin asking paddlers to have them beginning August 12. If you don't have a light - GET ONE! If you have a light and the batteries are shot - GET NEW BATTERIES!

I can bring all the Burito sized soft Tortillas we will need; will need to know how many, or make a best guess, by the day of the Potluck. Also could bring shredded Cheddar Cheese if the bodies aren't in large numbers to bring stuff...

...and do we need dead worms in the bottoms of e'special bottles :pirate5: I will get out my entrenching tool and the 12volt rod the night before

We're going strong with the food contributions!

So far we have:

Cyndi and Dave - beans, diced tomatoes, stove, and pots to heat food
Rob - cold salad with corn, tomatoes, onions, etc.
Peter - fruit tart for dessert
Kurt - tortillas and shredded cheese
Jesse - chips and salsa and drinks
Kingsley - shredded lettuce, guacamole, and drinks (and maybe some extra chips?)

We still need:
Sour cream
Sauteed peppers and onions

Cool ... this is going to be good! I'm guessing - by the time we hear from eveyone - we'll have a dozen or so folks so plan your contributions accordingly!

With Traute's contribution, that just leaves beverages. Unlikely that I'll be able to paddle, but I'll try to get down there by 8 to see everyone. It's been a while. - - Jen

Nelson and I will be there, and we will bring cooked rice (which can either be stirred in with the beans for heating or added cold). We'll also bring some sugar snap peas for munching on, and maybe an extra tub of guacamole, just in case.

We were sorry to miss last week's paddle.

As I write this at 4:05 pm, the current storm appears to be moving out of the area and looks like it should be gone by paddling time. However, there is another stormy area just crossing over from West Virginia to Virginia (Shenandoah Valley). No telling when that will get here but it does look like it's headed our way. In any event, if it's storming that won't stop us from eating!

The weather has pushed me over the line. Heading for home to curl up with a bottle of Nyquil. See you in a couple of weeks. - - Jen

Well, I tried

Postby jesSea » Thu Aug 05, 2010 6:13 pm

Tried to get to the marina. Traffic on the GW Pkwy was just too heavy due to downed trees just south of I395. No letup in the rain. I bailed and went home. Sorry to miss out :( See you next week.
